Workshop II
Modes of Listening - The Alienating Feedback of Sound
01/10 – 06/10/2007

By Tom Lamberty (D), Heike Schleper (D), Bernhard Schreiner (D/A)
With Philip Jeck (GB), Francisco López (E), Staalplaat Soundsystem (NL/D) and Matthias Vogel (D)

"Modes of Listening" is going to carry out some theoretical as well as practical research in the field of 21st century experimental music-production and -reception. Artists like Francisco López, Philip Jeck and the Staalplaat Soundsystem will provide an insight into their current work and discuss their artistic positions.
That way major theoretical concepts are put into question: Are long-serving conceptual models like producer-recipient, sender-receiver or feedback-decoupling still of relevance today? Are concepts like the acousmatic, composition, sound, ecological listening or live-electronics still applicable to capture the most advanced practices in electronic music?
Finally, after a series of theory- and practice-sessions, some basic questions like "What does it actually mean to understand music?" or "Why do we hear music at all?" are revisited together with the philosopher Matthias Vogel.

Bernhard Schreiner studied at Kunstakademie Städelschule in Frankfurt, where he is currently assistant for film/video. His artistic work includes film, video and photography, often with found materials. He also deals with the subjects of sound production and music in live performances and installations. He founded the "feld" label together with Heike Schleper in 2004. He lives in ###Frankfurt and Berlin.

Heike Schleper lives in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin. Studied philosophy, co-founder and operator of "feld", an experimental music label. Works as freelance curator, among other things as a member of the independent curator group Unfriendly Takeover.

Philip Jeck has been creating sound with record-players since the early 80's. He has worked with many dance and theatre companies and played with muscians such as Jah Wobble, Steve Lacy and Christian Fennesz. He has released 7 solo CDs the most recent "7"l. His largest work made with Lol Sargent (The Union Chapel London, 1993) received a Time Out Performance Award). Vinyl Coda I-III, 1999 won the Karl Sczuka Foderpreis for Radio Art. He also works as a visual artist, usually incorporating sound and has shown installations at The Hayward Gallery, London, The Hamburger Bahnhof Gallery, Berlin and ZKM, Karlsruhe. He most recently performed at The Shanghai Bienalle.

Tom Lamberty works as publisher of the Berlin-based Merve-Verlag, stachyologist and corporate consultant, among other things.

Francisco López is internationally recognized as one of the major figures of the experimental music scene. Over the last twenty-five years he has developed an astonishing sonic universe, based on a profound listening of the world. He has realized hundreds of concerts, projects with field recordings, and sound installations in 50 countries of the five continents. His extensive catalog of sound pieces (with live and studio collaborations with over 100 international artists) has been released by more than 150 record labels worldwide, and he has been awarded twice with honorary mentions at the competition of Ars Electronica Festival.

Staalplaat Soundsystem
Staalplaat – for more than twenty-five years this name has stood for one of the most exciting independent experimental music labels. Seven years ago, Staalplaat founder Geert-Jan Hobijn joined forces with Carsten Stabenow, founder of the German Media Art Festival “garage”, and the artist Carlo Crovato, who works under the pseudonym plastic-electric, to launch Staalplaat Soundsystem. In this constellation, Staalplaat creates acoustic installations of gigantic dimensions: converted household appliances and various other utensils, washing machines, floor polishing machines, vacuum cleaners, kitchen blenders and fans are transformed into wondrous sound generators that perform together in large-scale machine orchestras.

Most recently, visiting professor at Vienna University. Publications include: "Medien der Vernunft" (2001), "Wissen zwischen Entdeckung und Konstruktion" (2003, with Lutz Wingert), "Musikalischer Sinn" (2007, ed. with Alexander Becker).
