The Ö1 radio show “Zeitgenossen im Gespräch” (Interviews with contemporaries) will be stopping off at The Theatre on Sunday. Michael Kerbler will be talking with cultural and religious studies scholar Jan Assmann about the significance and function of cultural memory.
According to Jan Assmann, every society bases its awareness of unity and peculiarity on cultural memory. Among other things, this interview will focus on the question of the role of cultural memory in the construction of the past and identity. On the basis of historical events, the aim is to demonstrate that the consequences of historical events influence current history. Waterloo, the Battle of Kosovo, and the Battle of Masada live on because cultural memory will have it so.
