It is the year 50 according to the calendar of cosmic Komsomols: In 1957, the Soviet Union succeeded in launching a small “travelling companion” into orbit, thus ushering in the era of space travel. A Sputnik shock for the Western world – after all, it was clear now that the Soviet Union was also capable of reaching America with its rockets. Nuclear freeze.
“Time Republic” starts out from this zero point, telling a different story of the twentieth century about the forgotten promises of a past future. And about the last cosmonaut, orbiting alone in space in 1991, while far below on Earth the Soviet Union was falling apart.
The young, international performance collective andcompany&Co., founded by Alexander Karschnia, Nicola Nord and Sascha Sulimma in 2003, sets out in search of the presence of the future in the present, going back to the past to found a state that exists not on territory but rather in time. The stage becomes a retro-futurist cockpit controlling the time-ship. With all technology at the ready, the seven performers/temponauts are in constant interaction with light, music, movement and image – a stage floor and installation at once.
“Time Republic” is a humorous game with facts and fictions, that musically gels fragments of aesthetic and philosophical drafts of the twentieth century, remixing them to create a new political statement – translating historical political contexts into a living, contemporary language.
The Cold War is staged as victory over the sun, and Ronald Reagan’s fear of Juri Gagarin’s alien invasion meets with a smile sent from heaven: “Space is dark, comrades, very dark.”
